It’s the Glorious Time When We Need to Get Lots of Sunscreen

Let’s face it. In New York, we all say how much we love the seasons.

Oh, I could never live in L.A. Who needs 70 degrees and sunny every day?”

But even the most ardent lover of cold, snow, and freezing rain certainly welcomes May when the temperatures are really heating up and we spend as much time as possible outdoors. This blog just before summer is here to remind you to protect your skin when you’re out there. The days of the Coppertone Girl and the impressively dark tan line are the days of yore.

At Romeo & Juliette we live for removing your unwanted hair, but we also don’t like to see patients come in with sun-hammered skin. So, what should you look for in a sunscreen? Well, let’s get into that.

  •     Look for broad spectrum — Do they even make single spectrum anymore? Sunscreens should protect from both UVA and UVA rays. They used to only protect for UVB rays, as that is the UV radiation that causes a sunburn. Then research came along saying the UVA rays, while not openly burning the outer skin, could actually cause more damage from penetrating into the deeper layer, the dermis, prematurely aging the skin and maybe leading to more skin cancers.
  •     Water-resistant is brain proof…almost — None of us apply sunscreen often enough. That’s especially true if we’re in and out of the water. If your sunscreen is not water-resistant, it’s gone when you come out of the water. But if you have a water-resistant formula it will stay on much longer. Long periods in the water will need re-application, but for shorter periods you’ll stay covered. This makes forgetting pretty much impossible.
  •     Go for SPF 30 or more — First off, SPF, what’s the meaning of that ubiquitous acronym? Sun Protection Factor. 30 SPF means you can stay in the sun, at least theoretically, 30 times longer than if you did not have sunscreen applied. You can pay a pretty penny for increasing SPF numbers, but they only protect a couple percent points higher than 30 SPF. Here’s the breakdown:

o   SPF 15 blocks 93% of UVB rays

o   SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays

o   SPF 50 blocks 98% of UVB rays

You can see the difference between SPF 30 and SPF 50 is all of one percent, and you’re likely to pay an extra $10 or more for it. You can decide.

  •     Choose a lotion — Spray-on sunscreen is popular because it’s easy. You don’t have to get someone to put lotion on the center of your back, for instance. But you also miss lots of spots with aerosol sunscreen. Which is more unpleasant? Asking your little brother to put lotion on your back or burning the bejesus out of that spot on your shoulder blade?

There, now you are prepared to go forth and conquer the beach without needing to crawl in the refrigerator due to a massive sunburn afterwards.
