How Does Facial Laser Hair Removal Work?
Laser hair removal follows the same procedure wherever it is done on the body. The laser energy is pulsed onto the unwanted hair and targets each individual follicle. The laser light energy is absorbed by the melanin (which provides the hair color) in the hair shaft. The energy then converts to heat and travels down the shaft into the hair follicle. There, the heat damages the follicle, preventing the follicle from producing hair in the future. Once the follicle is destroyed, you will no longer have to worry about facial hair. It may take more than one treatment to completely prevent any regrowth.
Why Do Some Women Have Facial Hair?
About 20 million women remove their facial hair at least once a week. Excess hair growth can be a side effect of the changing hormones that come with aging. It can seem that the fine vellus hair that was on our faces before puberty has been replaced by dark hair, also called terminal hair. This growth of facial hair is normal and can usually be linked to an increase in the androgen to estrogen ratio as estrogen levels decline during menopause.
There is one cause of female facial hair growth that is not normal, however — hirsutism. Hirsutism is caused by an overproduction of androgens by the ovaries or the adrenal gland. It can have a variety of causes, everything from polycystic ovary syndrome to taking certain medications such as oral contraceptives.
Mustache Laser Hair Removal for Women
Our lasers at Romeo & Juliette Laser Hair Removal are able to safely remove unwanted hair found on the upper lip. For women, we know this can be both a self conscious area and also an embarrassing discussion. By providing this safe and easy procedure, our team can help to increase your confidence and deliver the skin you’ve always desired. When you remove hair with a razor, it can create stubble or even the dreaded 5 o’clock shadow.
How Can I Prepare for My First Laser Hair Removal Session?
Before your first laser hair removal session, we will have a consultation to discuss how you can best prepare. Generally, we recommend stopping any kind of waxing or tweezing two weeks prior to your treatment. This leaves the roots of your hair intact so they can be targeted with the laser. We recommend avoiding unnecessary sun exposure in the weeks before your appointment and shaving the treatment area 24 to 48 hours before you come in for your session. Make sure your treatment area is makeup and product free, and you will be ready for your first laser hair removal session!
How Do I Take Care of My Skin After Laser Hair Removal?
After your laser hair removal session, we recommend soothing your skin with an ice pack or a cool compress. In the following days, your skin may be more sensitive, so you should avoid unnecessary sun exposure and wear sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Keep your skin hydrated by applying gentle moisturizers and making sure to drink plenty of water.
How Long Does a Facial Laser Hair Removal Session Take?
The length of your session will depend on your particular treatment area, but laser hair removal is generally considered to be a fast, efficient procedure. A single session can often be completed in less twenty minutes. Because this procedure requires no downtime, you can easily come in for your appointment and then immediately return to your day.
Is Facial Laser Hair Removal a Common Procedure?
Yes, laser hair removal is one of the most common cosmetic procedures performed in the United States. Many people choose to get facial laser hair removal because the procedure is straightforward, quick, cost-effective, and provides long-lasting results. In addition, getting unwanted hair on your face removed can help you feel more confident in your skin and appearance.
When Will I See the Results of My Laser Hair Removal Treatment?
After your treatment, results will be immediate but sometimes, depending on skin tone and complexion, it may take a few days for the hair in your treated areas to fall out. To help speed up the shedding process, you may be advised to gently exfoliate the area. After a few weeks, you will be able to see the results of your first laser hair removal treatment.
Although laser treatments are effective, it is possible that some hair will grow back, either due to the follicle not being completely damaged or because the hair wasn’t in the optimal stage of its growth cycle. For these reasons, most of our patients require six to eight treatments to completely remove any unwanted hair. We will design a plan for you and explain how occasional touch-up treatments can offer the very best results.
When Is It Safe to Have Another Laser Treatment for Hair Removal?
Typically, we recommend spacing out laser hair removal treatments four to six weeks apart. However, this will depend on which area of the body you are treating, as different areas have different hair growth cycles. The exact number of treatments you will need will depend on your hair coarseness and density, as well as your hair reduction goals. During your consultation, we will determine how many treatments you are likely to require and create a schedule that is safe and effective.
How Many Laser Hair Removal Treatments Will I Need?
The number of laser hair removal treatments you will need varies completely by the person. Plan on anywhere from 3-7 treatments, with occasional touchups after that. The goal is to catch as many hairs as possible in the growth phase. But there’s the catch — every one of our millions of hairs operates independently and can be in any of the three cycles at any time.
Why Do I Need Multiple Laser Hair Removal Treatments At Your NYC Office?
People wonder why they need multiple treatments to remove their hair permanently. It all has to do with the human hair growth cycles: growth (anagen), transitional (catagen), and resting (telogen). Laser energy is only effective when the hair is in the growth/anagen phase. This is because these hairs are still actively engaged in the follicle. During the catagen and telogen phases, the hairs are in the process of being shed, so laser energy has no effect on the follicles.
Will the Hair Grow Back After Laser Hair Removal?
Sometimes the laser energy doesn’t completely damage the hair follicle and over time it can again grow hair. Plus, with so many hairs on our bodies, including our faces, it’s virtually impossible to remove them all. We achieve 85 to 90 percent hair reduction for our patients. Any hairs that do re-grow tend to be finer and lighter in color. Later “touch-up” sessions can keep these hairs to a minimum.
Does Facial Laser Hair Removal Hurt?
Most of our patients at Romeo & Juliette tolerate laser hair removal very well, including on the face. When the laser energy pulses onto your skin, patients equate the feeling to that of a small rubber band being snapped lightly on the skin. If you prefer, we can apply some topical numbing cream prior to your session. Plus, don’t forget what shaving and waxing feels like!
What are the Side Effects of Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal has been commonplace for the past 20 years. It has been thoroughly tested and proven safe. At Romeo & Juliette Laser Hair Removal our entire team has the industry’s most extensive training, coupled with the largest assortment of lasers to match our patients’ varying hair types and colors. After your treatment, you may have some slight redness and tenderness across the treatment area, but that’s about it. There isn’t any recovery.
