What Is Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal is an FDA cleared cosmetic procedure that permanently reduces unwanted hair on the face and the body. It is a popular alternative to traditional methods such as shaving or waxing . When performed by an experienced provider with the right equipment and settings , it is relatively quick and painless. This benefit alone is a great reason to choose it over options such as waxing. Plus, removing hair with a laser makes it much harder for regrowth to occur due to the disruption of the reproductive growth cycle. Over 1 million treatments are performed every year in the United States, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
How Does It Work?
Laser hair removal uses concentrated beams of light to target the melanin (pigment) within the hair follicles. During the treatment, the laser emits pulses of light that penetrate the skin and are absorbed by the melanin in the hair. This light energy is then converted into heat, which damages the follicles, inhibiting their ability to produce new hair. The precision of the laser allows it to selectively target hair without damaging the skin. Over a series of appointments, this process leads to a significant reduction in hair growth, resulting in smoother, hair-free skin.
Benefits of Laser Hair Removal
You may ask yourself, is hair removal worth it? The truth is there are many reasons to remove unwanted hair with lasers. Some of the most notable advantages of laser hair reduction include:
- Long-term Cost Savings: Stop spending money on razors and waxing appointments. Unlike temporary hair removal methods, laser hair removal offers a lasting solution.
- Lasting Hair Reduction: Over time, laser treatments lead to significant permanent hair reduction, leaving your skin smoother for longer periods.
- Reduced Ingrown Hairs: Laser hair removal minimizes the occurrence of ingrown hairs, a common issue with shaving and waxing. Once ingrown are gone, skin recovers to its natural condition.
- Minimal Discomfort: The treatment is designed to be gentle on the skin. With our advanced protocol and various cooling devices, most of our clients report almost painless laser hair removal appointments.
Ideal Candidates
If you are looking to get rid of unwanted hair and experience razor burns, cuts, bleeding, or ingrown hair due to shaving or other hair removal procedures at home, laser hair removal in NYC may hugely benefit you. This treatment is recommended for all clients regardless of skin color or complexion in overall good health who do not have any underlying health conditions.
If you are pregnant, on medication to treat acne, have genital herpes, or are prone to cold sores, this treatment may not be recommended. If in doubt, speak to your Laser Provider and Primary Care Physician and get clearance prior to laser hair removal.

- Abdomen
- Back

Preparing for Laser Hair Removal
We want you to get the best results from your hair reduction sessions at Romeo & Juliette Laser Hair Removal in New York City. To achieve them, we advise that you prepare for each appointment accordingly. Suggestions to follow throughout your treatment program include:
- Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds as much as you can. This can help prevent unnecessary irritation and allow us to use optimum settings. To prepare for laser treatment, get diligent about your use of broad-spectrum sunscreen. Apply sunscreen to the treatment area every day starting weeks before you begin your program.
- Don’t fake tan. Do not apply self-tanning lotions, creams, or other products. We want as much contrast between your skin tone and hair color as we can get.
- Watch what you take. Do not use any antibiotics or medicine that may cause sensitivity toward light or sun for a few days prior to treatment.
- Avoid strong skincare actives. Heavy-hitting skincare products have their place. However, you should not apply strong topicals to the treatment area as you prepare for laser hair removal. The general rule is that if it has an acid or creates photosensitivity, don’t use it.
- Shave. Twenty-four hours before your sessions, shave the treatment area. Having shorter hair can minimize the thermal effect of laser light. Essentially, it will make you more comfortable during your treatment and increase the efficacy. Keep in mind, though, that you cannot wax or pluck hair in the treatment area!
- Arrive ready. Dress comfortably for your appointment and come to the office with clean skin. Do not apply products to the treatment area.
How Long Is A Treatment Session?
The length of an individual laser hair removal treatment is determined by the density of hair growth and the overall size of the area to be treated. Small areas may take as little as 5 minutes, while larger areas, such as the back and leg, may require up to 45 minutes or longer.
Post-Treatment Instructions
The skin may be slightly sensitive after your treatments. General care guidelines include:
- Avoid sun exposure for at least a few days after treatment. This includes tanning beds.
- Aloe vera , over the counter hydrocortizone or cool towels can be placed on the skin to soothe any tingling or irritation.
- Saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs and intense workouts should be avoided for 24-48 hours after treatment.
- No additional ablative laser treatment or chemical peels should be conducted on the treated skin for at least one week.
- Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with minimum SPF 30 when outdoors.

Laser Hair Removal FAQ
Is Laser Hair Removal Safe?
This is a safe and well-tolerated procedure by most people. However, there are risks involved, such as minor burns or temporary pigmentation. The risks of laser treatments are significantly decreased when care is provided by trained professionals with specific experience conducting laser hair removal. At Romeo & Juliette, laser hair removal is all we do.
Does It Hurt?
Most individuals experience no more than a slight stinging sensation as the laser pulses are applied. We have novel Cooling Devices that make the treatment virtually painless. Some parts of the body do tend to be more sensitive than others and if needed , a topical numbing cream is available.
Are There Any Risks or Side Effects?
Laser hair removal is a safe treatment. However, patients may still experience a few temporary side effects during and after their appointment. These can include:
- Burning
- Stinging
- Redness
- Bruising
- Swelling
- Itching
- Sweating
- Pigmentation
Fortunately, under the care of the team at Romeo & Juliette Laser Hair Removal, we provide high-quality laser hair removal services so that these complications can be easily managed and avoided.
Does It Work With All Skin Tones and Hair Colors?
Laser hair removal has become quite advanced in recent years. Historically, laser hair removal could only be safely and effectively performed on individuals with lighter skin and darker hair. This is no longer the case. Advances in technology allow us to treat lighter hair colors and darker skin tones, even tanned skin. And because laser hair removal is the sole focus of our facility, we have equipped our office with multiple devices , even ones that work on lighter pigmented hair. This allows us to treat more patients.
Keep in mind that the best results are still achieved when there is sufficient contrast between the color of the skin and the color of the hair. Gray hair and very light blonde hair or “baby hairs” are generally unaffected by lasers. These hair colors cannot be treated with great efficacy regardless of the laser device. We do have devices in our Facility for less pigmented hair. Once you come in, we can do a test patch on a small area and tell you whether you are a good candidate or not.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
The number of treatments required for long-term benefits depends on the area being treated, your hair density, and the hair’s growth cycle. There are three phases of hair growth — Anagen (active), Catagen (regression), and Telogen (resting). Laser technology is designed to treat the hair in the Anagen phase of growth. Additional factors listed below influence hair growth and play a role in the location, thickness, and resilience of your hair.
- Age
- Ethnicity
- Weight
- Hormones
- Diet
- Medication
- Metabolism
- Lifestyle
Although each client is unique, experience tells us that you can expect an average of 4-8 treatments spaced 6 to 12 weeks apart, depending on the location of the unwanted hair.
Can Men Get Laser Hair Removal?
Romeo & Juliette offers laser hair removal for men at our NYC office. We use the world’s most advanced lasers, which allows us to treat men with any color and hair type effectively.
Our practice also offers ingrown laser hair removal as men tend to get ingrown hairs on the chin, cheeks, and neck.
Do People Regret Laser Hair Removal?
No, most clients do not regret having laser hair removal done. Since having it done makes staying hair-free easier, most people are quite happy that they decided to do so. It is important to have realistic expectations of what laser hair removal can accomplish. It will take time to see the final results of laser hair removal, so you will need multiple sessions before your hair stops growing back.
Why Does My Hair Grow So Fast After Laser Removal?
After a laser hair removal treatment, it is normal for some of your hair to grow back relatively quickly. This usually happens in the shedding phase. However, with subsequent sessions, your hair will eventually stop growing back as the hair follicles become dormant.
How Much Does Laser Hair Removal Treatment Cost In NYC?
Compared to a lifetime of waxing, shaving, or purchasing depilatory creams, laser hair removal is very affordable. The price is based on the size of the area to be treated. We do offer individual treatment pricing as well as packages that offer substantial savings and many extras. Please inquire with your technician.
Can I shave between sessions?
Yes, you can still shave. We actually recommend shaving the treatment area 24 hours before your appointment for best results. However, avoid hair removal methods targeting hair follicles, like waxing or plucking.
How soon will I see results from laser hair removal?
Most clients begin to see results after their first session, but a noticeable reduction in hair growth typically occurs after two to three sessions. Full results are usually achieved after completing the recommended series of treatments.
Is laser hair removal ok for sensitive skin?
Yes, laser hair removal is a safe option for sensitive skin. It is a non-invasive treatment that targets hair follicles without damaging the surrounding skin. However, if you have concerns, consult with a qualified professional at Romeo & Juliette Laser Hair Removal to be sure.
Can I have laser hair removal if pregnant or breastfeeding?
It's generally not recommended to undergo laser hair removal while pregnant or breastfeeding due to the lack of comprehensive studies on its effects during these periods. It's best to wait until after pregnancy and breastfeeding are complete before starting laser hair removal treatments.
How long do the results last?
Laser hair removal offers long-lasting results, with many people experiencing significant hair reduction that can last for months or even years. While some hair may eventually regrow, it tends to be finer and lighter. You can always come in for occasional maintenance sessions.
Can laser hair removal be performed over tattoos?
No, laser hair removal should not be performed over tattoos. The laser can target the tattoo pigment, causing damage, blistering, or ink fading. Your skilled provider can work around the tattooed areas during treatment.
What if I miss my laser hair removal session?
Missing a laser hair removal session can delay your results, as treatments are scheduled to target hair follicles during their growth cycle. If you miss an appointment, reschedule as soon as possible to get back on track with your treatment plan.
How does laser hair removal handle gray or white hair?
Laser hair removal is not as effective on gray or white hair because the laser is designed to target the hair follicle pigment (melanin). Since gray and white hairs lack pigment, it is difficult for the laser to target and remove them effectively.
How is laser hair removal and electrolysis different?
Laser hair removal uses light energy to reach and destroy the hair follicles, making it effective for reducing hair growth over multiple sessions. Electrolysis, however, uses an electric current to destroy individual hair follicles. Laser treatments are faster for larger areas, while electrolysis is more effective on less pigmented hair.
What Our Patients Have to Say
“Most professional laser hair removal I’ve seen in New York and I’ve been to a lot of them. Other places seem to charge you less by dividing all the parts of the body to the smallest increments but R&J prices on larger areas so in the end, it makes it more budget-friendly. I’m very happy with the results I’m getting from here. 100% recommend!”
