Ingrown hairs are a pain. These hairs that reenter the skin after shaving, waxing, or otherwise removing them, can create dark spots on your skin and can even leave a scar.
At Romeo & Juliette Laser Hair Removal, we help our clients eliminate their ingrown hairs.
What is an ingrown hair?
When a strand of hair reenters a hair follicle, it creates a sort of downward loop. The hair growth process isn’t the problem, it’s that the hair becomes trapped in the follicle. This inflames the surrounding tissue.
What are the symptoms of an ingrown hair?
While ingrown hairs aren’t a long-term health problem, they are surely a irritating immediate problem. Ingrown hairs can cause they uncomfortable symptoms:
- Itching
- Pain
- Redness or hyperpigmentation
- The formation of small solid bumps call papules
- The formation of pustules
Would it help me to have my ingrown hairs removed?
For most, ingrown hairs are usually just an occasional problem, but for some people they are a recurring problem. They can even lead to infections and may require an antibiotic series. Some people are prone to ingrown hairs recurring in the same area, usually on the face or the bikini line area.
How do you remove ingrown hairs?
We use the same process as our cosmetic laser hair removal for ingrown hairs; we simply do it in a more localized area. We target the laser energy onto the area where the ingrown hair typically forms. The laser energy is absorbed by the melanin in the hair shaft (the melanin gives the hair its color), where it converts to heat. The heat energy travels down the hair shaft into the follicle. In the follicle, the heat damages or destroys the hair follicle and with it the ability of that follicle to grow hair. Now there isn’t any chance of an ingrown hair developing in that area.
