Who’s Having a Little Something Done?

While your brother-in-law, the diehard Yankees fan, could be what you would call a “stats guy,” those are baseball statistics. When it comes to the aesthetic world, the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery is the king. The association keeps statistics on aesthetic procedures performed all over the world.
Although laser hair removal isn’t included in these numbers, it’s still interesting to see what kinds of aesthetic procedures are popular around the world. The most recent statistics are from 2016, and it’s interesting to note the changes and trends. As you would expect, demand for aesthetic procedures continues to grow, with a 9% increase in surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures in 2016.
Here are highlights of the 2016 ISAPS statistics.
Who have the most procedures?
Not sure what this points to, but just five countries account for over 41% of the world’s cosmetic procedures: USA, Brazil, Japan, Italy, and Mexico, while some countries such as Sweden and Norway don’t even make it into the top 25.
Here are the top 10 countries, with the number of procedures:
- USA — 4,217862, 17.9%
- Brazil — 2,524,115, 10.7%
- Japan — 1,137,976, 4.8%
- Italy — 957,814, 4.1%
- Mexico — 923,243, 3.9%
- Russia — 896,629, 3.8%
- India — 878,180, 3.7%
- Turkey — 789,564, 3.3%
- Germany — 730,437, 3.1%
- France — 517,731, 2.2%
What’s the most popular procedure?
Breast augmentation was once again the world’s most popular cosmetic surgery, accounting for 15.8% of all surgical procedures. Liposuction was second at 14% of all procedures, eyelid surgery third (12.9%), nose surgery (7.6%), and tummy tucks (7.4%).
On the non-surgical side, it’s no contest. Botox and other botulinum toxin brands were injected 4,627,752 times, a 7% increase over 2015.
What’s the fastest growing procedure?
Labiaplasty increased 45% over 2015 numbers. Next fastest growing were lower body lifts, upper body lifts, breast augmentation with fat transfer, and the butt lift.
What’s the difference between the sexes?
Women accounted for 86.2%, or 20,362,655 cosmetic procedures worldwide. For women, the five most popular procedures were breast augmentation, liposuction, eyelid surgery, abdominoplasty, and the breast lift.
Men accounted for 13.8% of cosmetic procedures, 3,264,254 procedures. For men, the top five were eyelid surgery, gynecomastia, nose surgery, liposuction, and hair transplants.
