What’s Your Skin Type?

woman portrait with fresh green exotic tropical leavesOK, if you’re out at Goldie’s in Brooklyn, that question in the headline may elicit a quizzical look from the person you’re trying to start up conversation with. Hey, at least it’s better than what’s your sign, right?

Well, at least your skin cares that you know what type it is, as this allows you to take better care of it. And doesn’t the largest organ on your body deserve that kind of treatment?

Since we’re all about removing unwanted hair at Romeo & Juliette, we also help our valued clients with skin care tips once that hair is removed. In this first blog after the vernal equinox, let’s get into skin types and caring for them.

What are the different skin types?

There are five different skin types: normal, dry, oily, sensitive, and combination. Your skin type can change over time. Hormonal fluctuations and normal aging are the typical reasons skin types change, but your cleaning routines, and weather and sun exposure can also impact it.

Caring for your skin by the type

Skincare routines are important. You don’t have to spend thousands on overpriced, overhyped lotions and exfoliants, but quality products are a good idea, as is a regular routine. Here’s how you customize your skincare by your skin type.

  • Normal — Normal skin isn’t easily irritated and doesn’t often have breakouts. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t need care. You need to wear sunscreen every day. Use a face wash to remove makeup and impurities at the end of the day. Avoid touching your face.
  • Dry — With dry skin you want to eliminate things that can exacerbate the problem. Avoid taking ultra-hot showers or baths and keep them short. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. Do this right after you shower to lock in more moisture. Use a humidifier in the winter months. Wash with a creamy, hydrating cleanser.
  • Oily — Taking care of oily skin requires you to pay careful attention to product ingredients. Stay away from products that will block your pores and opt for products labeled oil-free and non-comedogenic. Applying moisturizer seems counterintuitive, but it’s necessary even for oily skin.
  • Sensitive — Sensitive skin is easily irritated. You may need to do some trial and error to find skincare products that work for your sensitive skin. Opt for gentle, soap-free cleansers that are non-comedogenic and fragrance-free to limit any risk of irritation.
  • Combination — When your skin is a mix, use a mild cleanser and medium-weight moisturizer.
