Unfortunately, another New York summer has come and gone, and with it many people’s plans to have laser hair removal. They think in the short term and know they’re not going to be donning a bikini anytime soon, so they forget about coming to see us at Romeo & Juliette to have us get rid of some unwanted hair.
But fall is actually a great time to bid adieu to unwanted hair, courtesy of our 12 different lasers.
The hair growth cycle matters
People often wonder why they can’t come in and have a laser session and all of their unwanted hair will be gone. Blame it on the hair growth cycle. It consists of three phases: anagen (growth), catagen (transition), and telogen (resting). Laser energy only works to damage or destroy the hair follicle when the hair is actively anchored in the follicle, and this only happens during the anagen phase. In the catagen and telogen phases, the hairs are either on their way out or gone and the follicle is resting. Laser energy cannot get into the follicle in these phases.
Plus, humans have around five million hairs on our bodies, and each hair follicle holding them operates independently of the others. Think of them as five million independent contractors. The goal is to catch as many hairs as possible in the growth phase, but the hairs are constantly transitioning between phases. That’s why it takes a series of laser hair removal sessions to remove the most hair — we try to catch more and more of your unwanted hairs in the growth phase.
Good time to start
That’s why fall is actually a good time to start laser hair removal. On average, our clients need between 4 and 8 laser hair removal sessions to achieve the amount of permanent hair reduction they seek. These sessions need to be spaced between 6-12 weeks, depending on the body location of the unwanted hair.
You can see where this is going. If you start now, by next spring you’ll be in good shape for the upcoming bikini season. You’ll have been able to schedule the sessions you need with the corresponding separation between sessions.
Where can I have hair removed?
Since we’re talking about getting started, the next question could be “Where can I have hair removed?” A better question would be “Where can’t hair be removed?” We can remove hair anywhere on the human body with these exceptions: inside the nose, inside the ears, and on the male genitalia.
