Your Skin Needs Vitamins, too! Part two

In October’s first Romeo & Juliette blog, we told you your skin is just as excited by those gummy vitamin supplements you take as the rest of your body. It doesn’t care about lots of that stuff, like chromium or magnesium, but it wants four vitamins: D, C, E, and K.
We started with vitamin D, which is a critical vitamin across your entire body, but your skin loves it, as well.
In this scary blog for Halloween, let’s get into the other three vitamins for great skin.
Vitamin C is found at high levels in the epidermis and the dermis layers of the skin. Its antioxidant properties and its role in collagen production help keep your skin healthy. That’s why you’ll find vitamin C as a key ingredient in lots of antiaging skin care products.
Vitamin C helps enhance the effectiveness of sunscreen by decreasing cell damage and helping the healing process. It also helps fend off signs of aging because it is critical to the production of collagen. Vitamin C also is necessary to help repair skin and prevent dry skin.
Most of us get enough vitamin C, 1000 mg per day, because it’s everywhere. But if you’re shorting yourself, eat more citrus, broccoli, strawberries, and spinach. Drink orange juice or take any supplement (they all have lots of vitamin C).
Vitamin E is also an antioxidant. Its main function in skin care is to protect against sun damage. Vitamin E absorbs the harmful UV light from the sun when applied to the skin. Normally, the body produces vitamin E through sebum, the oil stuff that comes out of our pores. If you have particularly dry skin, your vitamin E in your sebum could be lacking so supplementation would help.
Most adults need about 15 mg of vitamin E daily. Increase your intake by:
- Eating more nuts and seeds, such as almonds, hazelnuts, and sunflower seeds
- Taking a multivitamin or separate vitamin E supplement
- Use topical products that contain both vitamin E and vitamin C
Vitamin K is an essential part of the body’s blood clotting ability, which heals wounds and clears bruises. The basic functions of vitamin K are also thought to help skin conditions such as stretch marks, spider veins, scars, dark spots, and under eye circles.
Vitamin K deficiencies in the U.S. are rare; adults need between 90 and 120 ug per day. If you need to up your K, eat more kale, spinach, dark lettuces, cabbage, and green beans.
